Encouraging Independence Through Self-Serving Mealtimes

At Banana Moon Kempston, we are always looking for ways to support children in developing important life skills as they grow.

Recently, our Full Moons have been practising self-serving during mealtimes. This simple everyday routine helps children build confidence and independence while learning valuable skills that will support them as they prepare for school and beyond.

By allowing children to serve themselves, they begin to develop an understanding of healthy food choices and portion control. They also gain experience using utensils independently and practising coordination while serving their meals.

Activities like this support several areas of our Early Learning and Development Programme, helping children to:
  • Make healthy food choices with an understanding of portion sizes
  • Develop independence and confidence in everyday routines
  • Use one-handed tools and utensils independently

These small moments during the nursery day provide wonderful opportunities for children to practise independence, build self-confidence and develop practical skills in a supportive environment.
